Chapter 592

Evelyn exhaled quietly through her nose.

She had every right to be furious, yet Alexander looked like he carried the burdens of the entire universe. What did he have to be so troubled about? Her thoughts simmered. "You're the one who abandoned your pregnant wife in confinement while running off with Isabella."

She jabbed her fork into the spaghetti, keeping her gaze firmly on her plate.

Alexander's face still bore the marks from his earlier altercation with Dominic.

Though Alexander had landed more blows, Dominic had fought back fiercely.

His jawline was swollen, and a thin trail of blood still seeped from the cut at the corner of his mouth.

When Evelyn had nearly cleared her plate, Alexander finally shattered the heavy silence. His piercing gaze locked onto hers as he demanded, "How do you know Dominic?"

The night's events had left him shaken.

He didn't believe Evelyn had arranged to meet Dominic intentionally.

It was obvious she'd been locked inside the concert hall, and Dominic had...

But Alexander couldn't comprehend why Dominic, of all people, had been the first to rescue her.

It ate at him, flooding his veins with guilt.

If only he'd realized sooner that Evelyn was trapped, he could have reached her first. Instead, it was Dominic who had intervened.

As her husband, he'd failed her profoundly.

But stronger than the guilt was the fear.

Unlike Ethan, Evelyn's ex, Dominic represented an unknown variable. Ethan belonged to the past, but Dominic was here now.

And Alexander had no clue when or how they'd met.

This complete lack of knowledge unsettled him deeply.

Seeing Dominic embrace Evelyn, hearing him declare his feelings, had nearly pushed Alexander over the edge.

He couldn't fathom how their relationship had reached such an intimate level.

Dominic's open concern and admiration for Evelyn made Alexander's skin crawl.

The thought of his wife being desired by another man sickened him.

Yet as a rational man, despite his jealousy, Alexander needed to understand. He had to know the truth.

Evelyn mattered to him.

He refused to unleash his dark emotions on her - that would only erode their love, not strengthen it.

Maintaining his composure, he pressed again. "Evelyn, when did you two meet?"

Her response came softly. "Just once, long ago. In prison."

Alexander's eyebrows shot upward. "And now? What's between you?"

"Nothing," she stated firmly. "He was my patient. I treated his injury and helped him walk again."

Relief washed through Alexander.

So it had all been a misunderstanding.

He reached across the table, capturing her hand. His voice dropped to a serious tone. "But he has feelings for you."

Evelyn set down her fork and met his gaze squarely. "I can't control others' emotions. But I swear to you, I've done nothing inappropriate. Now, what about you? Didn't you promise not to meet Isabella alone? Why were you with her tonight?"

Her large eyes glistened with unshed tears, her voice trembling with raw hurt.
