Chapter 509

Dominic's intense gaze sent shivers down Evelyn's spine. She instinctively recoiled, but his iron grip caught her wrist with bruising force.

The memory flashed through her mind - just a year ago in prison, Dominic had walked perfectly fine. Something terrible must have happened since then. Not that she cared to know the details.

"I figured it out myself," she said quickly. "When you gave me that acupuncture set at the auction, you were testing my medical knowledge."

His dark under-eye circles told the story - kidney deficiency affecting bone health. "The kidney governs the bones, so logically it would manifest in your-"

"Are you implying I'm bad in bed?" Dominic's voice dripped with dangerous amusement.

Evelyn's breath hitched as he yanked her forward, nearly tumbling her into his lap. The sudden proximity made her skin prickle with unease.

"That's not what I meant!" Her pulse raced as she realized her mistake. No man would take kindly to such an implication, even if medically accurate.

Dominic's hot breath fanned her neck as he murmured, "I can prove my stamina, Evelyn. Care to test me?"

Her hands flew up to push against his chest. "I only diagnosed your bone condition! Don't twist my words, Dominic!"

His dark chuckle sent another wave of panic through her. "You weren't so timid when knocking me unconscious. What changed?"

Everything had changed. She was married now, a mother. This dangerous flirtation had no place in her life.

Dominic's next words came too softly to decipher. "What did you say?" Evelyn asked.

"Your treatment plan for my leg," he redirected smoothly.

Evelyn carefully took his pulse, her brow furrowing at the findings. The injury dated back six months - likely from severe trauma. Difficult, but not impossible to treat. If only her mentor Jonathan were here...

"Give me two days to formulate a plan," she offered.

Dominic's hand slid to cradle the back of her head, his gaze turning predatory. "Do you know what happens to people who lie to me, sweetheart?"

His lips hovered dangerously close to her throat when a sharp knock shattered the tension.

Ethan Caldwell's drunken face appeared at the window, his breath reeking of alcohol. He'd been drinking with Trevor Moss nearby when he spotted Evelyn entering Dominic's car across the street.

Through his drunken haze, Ethan couldn't believe his eyes. What business could these two possibly have together?
