Chapter 386
The night was pitch black.
Alexander stumbled into Whitmore Manor, slightly intoxicated, loosening his tie with an impatient tug.
Everything remained exactly as Evelyn had left it. Her shoes still lined the shoe cabinet meticulously, her clothes untouched in the wardrobe. Yet, she was gone.
After a cold shower, Alexander collapsed onto the king-sized bed they once shared.
The pillow still carried traces of her favorite lavender shampoo—a scent that now haunted him.
Silence pressed heavily around him. Normally, the alcohol would have dragged him into unconsciousness by now.
But tonight, sleep refused to come.
His thoughts circled back to Evelyn.
Gritting his teeth, Alexander grabbed his phone and dialed her number.
Two sharp beeps. Then—nothing.
Blocked. Again.
His jaw clenched. He slammed his fist into the mattress, a frustrated growl tearing from his throat.
She had vanished without hesitation—erased herself from his life completely. No calls. No messages. Not even showing up at Titan Capital Group.
Was this the difference between love and indifference? When passion faded, did it leave only this—cold, calculated silence?
The emptiness of the room mocked him.
Alexander exhaled sharply, staring at the ceiling.
Somewhere out there, Evelyn was moving on.
And he was left here, drowning in the remnants of what they once had.
Evelyn Carter felt nothing for him, so walking away came without a second thought.
But her heart still belonged to Ethan Caldwell. Even after all this time apart, she couldn’t erase him from her mind. She would go back to him—no matter the cost.
Alexander Whitmore pressed the back of his hand against his eyes.
He was convinced he was unlovable.
At Titan Capital Group, Natalie Brooks propped her chin on her palm, staring at Evelyn’s vacant desk with a distant expression.
Cassandra Reed approached, arms laden with files, and murmured, “With over twenty years of experience, I can confidently say Mr. Whitmore and Evelyn had a major fight.”
Alexander had been working like a man possessed these past two days.
Titan Capital didn’t encourage overtime, yet his office lights burned bright well past nine, sometimes ten at night.
Last night was even stranger—he didn’t go home at all. He slept in his office.
And Evelyn? She hadn’t shown up for work in two days.
Something was definitely wrong.
Cassandra tilted her head curiously. "Do you really think Evelyn would forbid Alexander from returning home? She's always been so kind-hearted. That doesn't sound like her at all."
Victoria strode over just then, arms crossed. "Honestly, should we really be speculating about Mr. Whitmore's personal life? Don't we all have enough work to do?" She dropped a thick stack of files onto Cassandra's desk with a thud. "Here, make yourself useful. These contracts need reviewing by end of day."
The office hummed with quiet activity around them. Cassandra sighed dramatically as she pulled the first file toward her. Through the glass walls, she could see Evelyn's empty office - the CEO had left early again today.
Victoria lingered by Cassandra's desk, lowering her voice. "Between us? I heard Mr. Whitmore hasn't been seen at headquarters all week either." She tapped the files meaningfully. "Maybe focus on these instead of office gossip, hmm?"
Outside, rain began pattering against the windows of Titan Capital Group's high-rise. The weather mirrored the strange tension that had settled over the company recently. Even the usually unflappable Victoria seemed unsettled as she glanced toward Evelyn's darkened office once more before returning to her own workstation.
Cassandra chewed her lip thoughtfully as she opened the first file. Something unusual was definitely happening between their CEO and her enigmatic husband. But as Victoria said - perhaps some mysteries weren't theirs to solve.
