Chapter 470

What did that make her, then?

Hadn’t Alexander declared his love for her for an entire decade?

Without uttering a single word, Evelyn turned on her heel and walked away.

This was, after all, his company. As Alexander’s wife, causing a scene here would be inappropriate—it could damage his reputation.

She had to think of his position.

Perhaps it was better to wait until he returned home tonight. Then, they could talk properly.

Watching Evelyn leave so abruptly, Isabella found it strange.

She murmured under her breath, "Why didn’t she come in? Did she mistake the office?"

Inside, Alexander’s voice carried curiosity. "Isabella, what’s wrong?"

She turned back, flashing him a sweet smile. "I just saw a stunning woman. Your company really is filled with beauties."

Alexander didn’t take the bait. He had little interest in other women, though he did acknowledge the skewed gender ratio in the executive offices. He assumed she was referring to one of the assistants.

"Is this about my feelings or my career?" Isabella laughed lightly, her fingers tracing the rim of her coffee cup. "Career-wise, I want to join Titan Capital Group and work as your assistant. Would that be acceptable?"

"Isabella." Alexander sighed, rubbing his temple. "Don’t joke like that. You can’t be my assistant."

She rose from her seat, shutting the office door with deliberate softness before returning to face him. Leaning forward, she rested her elbows on his desk, chin propped on her hands. "Do you think I’m overqualified? That working under you would be beneath me?"

Her eyes sparkled with mischief, lips curving into an innocent smile.

"Then pay me more. It’s not like you can’t afford it."

Alexander exhaled, pinching the bridge of his nose. "You—a world-renowned violinist—coming to Titan Capital as my assistant? Your fans would storm the building if they found out."

"You flatter me," she teased, twirling a lock of her dark hair. "That charity concert was a one-time thing. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be so broke I can’t even repay what I owe you."

At that, he set his pen down. "I told you, forget about the money. We don’t keep tabs between us."

Isabella tucked her hair behind her ear, expression turning serious. "You sponsored my education out of kindness. I can’t keep taking advantage of that."

The weight of Rachel’s words lingered in the air.

The Powell family. We’re engaged. It’s not unreasonable to expect him to help settle my debts, is it?

Alexander’s expression darkened. "Isabella, don’t force yourself into this. If you don’t want to marry him, don’t. Dominic has a criminal record. He’s not the right man for you."

Stepping out of Titan Capital Group, Evelyn felt strangely detached, her thoughts scattered.

Claire had called, insisting on seeing her.

Now that Claire’s pregnancy had progressed, her movements were slower, less fluid. Without hesitation, Evelyn hailed a cab and headed straight to her friend’s home.

Ever since the accident, Alexander had forbidden her from driving, his concern for her safety bordering on overprotective.

The moment Claire saw Evelyn, her eyes widened in alarm.

"You look terrible. What’s wrong?"

Evelyn’s face was ghostly pale, her usual vibrancy dulled.

She shook her head slightly, offering no explanation.

She hadn’t pieced everything together yet. There was no point burdening Claire with half-formed suspicions.

She would wait until she got home, until she could confront Alexander properly. The last thing she wanted was to make a scene over what might just be a misunderstanding.

Evelyn forced a smile. "What did you want to talk about?"
