Chapter 94
The doctor and Eleanor were both in the room, standing by the window discussing Dominic's condition.
Evelyn's feet felt like they were weighed down with lead. She couldn't bring herself to step inside.
When Bianca turned from the bed with a glass of water in hand, she immediately spotted Evelyn lingering outside the door.
"Evelyn! What are you doing here?" Bianca hissed, careful not to wake Dominic.
She set the glass down on the nightstand and marched toward Evelyn. Eleanor heard the commotion and followed.
Evelyn instinctively retreated toward the stairs, not wanting to disturb Dominic. But Bianca mistook her movement for an escape attempt and blocked her path.
"Evelyn! Are you playing games with Dominic?!" Bianca's voice was venomous. "If you don't love him, let him go! If you hurt him again, I swear I'll make you regret it!"
Eleanor's sharp voice cut through the tension. "Evelyn, Dominic refuses to divorce you because he's under your spell! I never thought you'd be this ungrateful! I was a fool to believe you were decent! If I'd known, I would've chosen Bianca for him from the start—she's the only one who truly loves him!"
Evelyn had no energy to argue. She'd only come to check on Dominic. Now that she'd seen him, that was enough.
"Just take care of him. I'm leaving." Evelyn pushed past Bianca and descended the stairs, each step heavier than the last.
Downstairs, the group led by Lucas strained to hear the confrontation above.
When Evelyn reappeared, "defeated," the room buzzed with mixed reactions. Some smirked, others shook their heads in pity. But none of it mattered—only Dominic's opinion did. And right now, he was unconscious, oblivious to it all.
"Miss Thorne, you came by taxi, didn't you? Let me drive you back," Nathan offered politely.
Evelyn shook her head. "I'll manage."
She turned toward the door.
Mrs. Wilkins watched Evelyn's slumped shoulders and hurried after her. "Madam, you forgot your laptop."
Evelyn blinked, as if snapping out of a daze. She turned back, crossed the living room, and entered her old bedroom.
"I should go wake Dominic," Lucas muttered. "If Evelyn walks out tonight, she might never come back."
Nathan nudged him. "Then go shout! I'll back you up."
Lucas shot him a look. "Not with Lady Eleanor here. I value my job."
Minutes later, Evelyn emerged, rolling her suitcase behind her. She'd claimed to return for her computer, but it was just an excuse. If Dominic had woken, if they'd talked—maybe things would've been different.
Mrs. Wilkins bit her lip. She'd genuinely hoped Dominic might wake while Evelyn was upstairs. At least then, they'd have had a chance.
"Madam, why not wait until Master Dominic wakes? You could tell him yourself," Mrs. Wilkins suggested.
Evelyn's reply was firm. "No need."
With that, she stepped into the frigid night, suitcase in tow.
Eleanor stormed downstairs, livid.
"Evelyn! Don't you dare come back!"
Lucas sighed inwardly.
She was making everything worse.
Evelyn had always been stubborn. The Mr. X situation still weighed on her, and now Eleanor's outburst had pushed her over the edge. How could she stay after this?
Evelyn ignored Eleanor's threats. Within moments, she vanished into the darkness.
"You all saw it!" Eleanor snapped. "I didn't force her out! She left on her own!"
