Chapter 72

Evelyn's breath hitched as she stood frozen on the sidewalk.

The moment she registered her phone being ripped from her grasp, instinct propelled her forward in pursuit of the fleeing thief.

But after three strides, her hands flew protectively to her abdomen. The reality of her pregnancy stopped her cold.

With reluctant steps, she turned back toward the manor.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Wilkins was dialing Dominic with trembling fingers.

"Mr. Blackwood, Mrs. Thorne had her phone stolen during her evening walk. We filed a report at the precinct, but they said recovery was unlikely." The housekeeper's voice dropped to a whisper. "She's been distraught - says it contained irreplaceable data. She's locked herself in the west wing bedroom, crying uncontrollably."

This was a calculated exaggeration. Mrs. Wilkins hadn't actually seen Evelyn's tears, but she knew exactly which buttons to push.

Across town, Dominic was seated at Villa Serenade awaiting Tristan Chamberlain's arrival for their scheduled negotiation.

The call ended after forty-seven seconds. By the forty-ninth second, Dominic's decision was made.

When Tristan arrived, he found only Nathan Cross waiting at the reserved table.

"Where's your illustrious boss?" Tristan's eyebrow arched with amusement.

"My apologies, Mr. Chamberlain. An urgent family matter required Mr. Blackwood's immediate attention," Nathan offered smoothly. "He's asked me to convey his regrets."

"How convenient." Tristan's laugh held an edge. "Tell me, does the great Dominic Blackwood often send underlings to do his dirty work?"

Nathan's smile never wavered. "If Mr. Blackwood wished to avoid you, he wouldn't resort to subterfuge. He fears no one."

Tristan settled into his chair, studying Nathan like a chess opponent. "Last I checked, family wasn't exactly Dominic's priority. Who merits such dramatic intervention?"

"His wife." Nathan's simple answer silenced further questions.

"I presume this meeting concerned Miss Evelyn Thorne." Nathan continued carefully. "Forgive my forwardness, but Mr. Blackwood is... particularly attached to her. For your own sake, I'd recommend maintaining distance."

Tristan's fingers drummed the tablecloth. "Ever considered switching allegiances, Nathan? I could triple your current compensation."

Nathan's composure slipped for a heartbeat.

"Your offer is generous, Mr. Chamberlain, but I have no intention of leaving Blackwood Group. Unless dismissed, I'll remain at Mr. Blackwood's side."

"Why?" Genuine curiosity colored Tristan's question.

"You might ask Bianca why she stays."

"Because she's hopelessly in love with him. Don't tell me you are too?" Tristan's chuckle was rich with amusement.

"Not romantically." Nathan's gaze turned thoughtful. "People fixate on his temper, but every diamond has multiple facets. The man who never smiles may have the purest heart, while constant charm often masks darkness."

"Are you implying something about me?" Tristan's eyes narrowed.

"Of course not." Nathan met his gaze squarely. "You're a formidable opponent, but my loyalty isn't for sale."

Nathan understood Tristan's game perfectly - acquiring insider knowledge by poaching Dominic's most trusted aide.

"Betrayal is a habit," Nathan added. "If I turned on Mr. Blackwood today, how could you ever trust me?"

Meanwhile, Dominic's arrival at the 12th Precinct sent officers scrambling.

The precinct captain appeared within ninety seconds, buttoning his uniform jacket hastily.

"A stolen phone? That thief must have a death wish!" The captain thumped his chest. "We'll have it back within twenty-four hours, guaranteed!"

"Not mine." Dominic's voice was ice.

The captain visibly relaxed. "Oh thank God, I thought—"

"My wife's." Dominic took a measured sip of water. "Can you still guarantee twenty-four hours?"

The captain's Adam's apple bobbed. "Absolutely! Our surveillance network is comprehensive. We'll initiate a citywide search immediately!"

Dominic gave a single nod. "I'd appreciate that."

"Just doing our job, sir!" The captain flipped open the incident report. "Your wife's name is... Evelyn Thorne?"
