Chapter 478

Evelyn strode confidently into St. Elizabeth Medical Center, heading straight for the maternity ward.

Michael grabbed her arm at the last moment, steering her toward the ultrasound department instead.

She arched an eyebrow in silent question.

"I think...we should get an ultrasound first," Michael said, his attempt at casualness failing miserably.

Finally, he admitted, "Dominic's here. Waiting for you in the ultrasound room."

Evelyn jerked her arm free. "Since when did you become his informant?" she snapped.

Michael raised his hands defensively. "I'm not! Nathan told me!"

"Who works for Dominic. What's the difference?" Evelyn countered sharply.

"Of course there's a difference!" Michael insisted, grabbing her arm again. "Nathan isn't like that bastard! He promised me he'd quit if Dominic ever mistreats you again!"

"You still shouldn't be reporting my every move!"

"I didn't tell them everything," Michael protested. "I didn't mention your improved appetite lately, or how your morning sickness has nearly disappeared, or your suspicion that..." He trailed off, then added softly, "It's such a shame if the baby's really gone. Are you scheduling the procedure today?"

Evelyn's voice thickened with emotion. "If there's no heartbeat...then yes."

Her early pregnancy symptoms had diminished dramatically in recent days.

Instead of relief, she felt only dread - it likely meant she'd lost the baby.

She'd eaten a full breakfast before coming to the hospital without a hint of nausea.

Though mentally prepared for bad news, the pain intensified with each step through the hospital doors.

And now Dominic was here.

How would he react if the baby was truly gone?

The elevator doors opened on the ultrasound floor.

Evelyn's gaze immediately locked onto the man waiting outside the examination room.

Dominic stood there in an impeccably tailored light gray shirt and dark trousers - a stark departure from his usual all-black attire.

Her footsteps grew heavier as she approached.

Dominic watched her intently, words failing him as she drew near.

She looked well - cheeks fuller, color in her face.

Apparently her week had been comfortable.

Without a word, Evelyn brushed past him into the room, Dominic following close behind.

She lay on the table and lifted her shirt.

The cold gel made her flinch as the doctor began the examination.

With Dominic standing beside her, Evelyn closed her eyes, bracing for the verdict.

"Well, Miss Thorne," the doctor finally said, "are you experiencing any other symptoms?"

Evelyn opened her eyes. "My appetite's improved significantly."

The doctor smiled. "That's excellent. Any bleeding or spotting?"

"None."

"Good news then," the doctor said, wiping the gel away. "Your baby appears perfectly healthy. You may continue resting at home and return when you reach twelve weeks."

Evelyn froze.

The baby was fine?

Her symptoms had simply...subsided early?

Dominic helped her sit up, his voice low. "You thought you'd lost it, didn't you?"

Heat flooded Evelyn's cheeks at being so transparent.

They exited together to find Michael waiting anxiously.

"Don't be upset, Evelyn," he said consolingly. "Your health matters most!" He brandished a form. "I've already scheduled the procedure with the best specialist!"

Evelyn gaped wordlessly.

Dominic snatched the paper, tore it to shreds, and flung it in the trash. Michael's blue eyes blazed with fury.
