Chapter 413
Michael picked up a glass of water, his fingers tightening around it. "What's going on with your boss? You can't just come running to Evelyn every time he's in trouble—"
"He's dead." Nathan's voice cracked.
Michael choked on his water. "Are you joking? You're telling me he's dead? How?"
"I don't know. The internet says he's gone."
Michael was stunned into silence. Seeing Nathan on the verge of breaking down, he slammed the glass onto the table and stormed toward his room.
"Don't panic. Let me call Evelyn. She was on the phone with me last night. She said her injuries weren’t as bad anymore—that she’d be back in a few days. She didn’t mention anything happening to Dominic—"
"It happened early this morning." Nathan followed him, his voice hollow. "We can’t reach him. Or his bodyguard. I’ve worked for him for years. This has never happened before."
Michael grabbed his phone and dialed Evelyn, putting it on speaker before she even answered.
The line rang for what felt like an eternity.
"Evelyn!" Michael’s voice was thick with urgency, mirroring Nathan’s distress. "I heard Dominic’s dead. What happened? Tell me you had nothing to do with this!"
Evelyn lay in bed, staring blankly at the ceiling. Her voice was raw. "I did it."
Michael froze. Nathan’s breath hitched.
"I did it," she repeated, quieter this time.
"Are you—are you okay?" Michael raked a hand through his hair, disbelief twisting his features. "Why? Why would you kill him?"
"I don’t know…" Her voice broke. She had been crying for hours, her throat shredded. "I don’t know how it ended like this—"
"Stop. Just—stop crying. I’m coming to get you right now." Michael snatched a jacket from his closet. "Don’t you dare turn off your phone!"
When the call ended, Nathan stood motionless, his mind numb.
His boss was really gone. And Evelyn had killed him.
A bitter laugh escaped him. "How poetic."
He had always believed that despite their fights, they were meant to be together—that once they worked through their issues, they’d find their way back to each other.
He never imagined tragedy would be their ending.
As Michael shoved his feet into his shoes by the door, he finally registered Nathan’s presence.
"…Nathan. Evelyn messed up. Badly. But I’m still on her side." Michael straightened, meeting Nathan’s gaze. "I’m sorry. If you want to cut ties with me, go ahead."
Without waiting for a response, Michael walked out, not looking back.
He had made his choice long ago—Evelyn came first. No matter what.
Nathan removed his glasses, wiping his eyes. Losing Michael wasn’t the worst part of today.
The worst part was knowing Dominic was dead.
For a while, he just stood there, unsure how to return to the office. When he finally did, he couldn’t bring himself to tell Vincent.
Instead, he called Lucas.
"Did she really say that?" Lucas’s voice was sharp.
"I heard it myself. She admitted it." Nathan’s voice trembled. "I never thought she’d be capable of something like this."
"Stop crying. I’m at the hospital. The latest update is that he’s still in the ER. They’re trying to revive him."
Nathan went still. Then, slowly, he pulled himself together. "Where was he hurt? Why is it this serious?"
"His heart."
Nathan exhaled sharply. "How could she?"
"The bodyguard said Dominic did it to himself." Lucas’s tone was grim. "Even if Evelyn was involved, he wouldn’t blame her."
"That’s what he said?"
"The bodyguard told me. Dominic was unconscious before they even got him to the hospital." Lucas pinched the bridge of his nose. "His estate lawyer just showed up too. The news spread fast."
