Chapter 110
Evelyn found herself tucked away in the quiet corner of Ravenswood University's library after grabbing a quick dinner at the campus cafe.
A sudden burst of excited chatter made her glance up from her medical textbook.
"It's snowing! First snowfall this winter! And it's coming down hard! Let's go make snow angels!"
"Wait for me! I need to capture this for Instagram!"
Within minutes, half the library emptied out.
Curious, Evelyn walked to the frost-kissed window, watching delicate snowflakes pirouette from the heavens.
The scene was breathtakingly beautiful.
No wonder there was that romantic saying about confessions during first snowfall being destined to succeed.
Beautiful things did have a way of lifting spirits.
"Your phone's vibrating," a soft voice interrupted as someone tapped Evelyn's shoulder gently.
She blinked, snapping out of her reverie. "Oh! Thank you."
Hobbling slightly, she made her way back to her study carrel.
Evelyn had stubbornly delayed getting proper treatment for her swollen ankle.
Now the stubborn injury was taking its sweet time healing.
Still, she refused to let it slow her down.
She grabbed her buzzing phone, her breath catching when she saw the caller ID.
After the brief conversation, Evelyn's face transformed - eyes sparkling, lips stretching into an incredulous smile.
The radiant expression remained even after she ended the call.
Could this be her lucky break?
Maybe someone up there was finally looking out for her.
With trembling hands, Evelyn shoved her books into her bag and hurried toward the exit as fast as her injured foot allowed.
Her phone rang again just as she pushed through the heavy library doors.
"Evelyn! Tell me you're not still buried in books during the first snow!" Sophie's cheerful voice chimed through the phone.
"Sophie! I'm going to grad school!" Evelyn blurted out.
"What?! Since when?" Sophie's shocked squeal made Evelyn hold the phone away from her ear. "You swore you weren't continuing! What changed overnight?"
"Do you know Professor Sebastian Whitmore?"
"Should I?" Sophie asked. "Some hotshot researcher?"
"The hottest! He's my academic idol! His assistant just called... said the professor wants me in his program..." Evelyn's voice cracked with emotion. "This is everything I've ever wanted... I can't believe he chose me..."
Sophie practically vibrated with excitement for her best friend.
"I've always told you you were destined for greatness! Finally believing me now? Where are you? We're celebrating tonight!"
Evelyn's head spun with exhilaration. Wiping happy tears, she laughed. "All I want right now is my bed. I'm exhausted. Rain check on celebrations?"
"Still not sleeping well?" Sophie's tone softened. "Adrian mentioned Dominic was discharged today. Don't worry about him - with his army of helpers, he'll be back to his brooding self in no time."
"I know," Evelyn murmured.
It wasn't his recovery that weighed on her, but the crushing guilt.
If not for her, he never would have been on that hill.
After hanging up, Sophie turned to Adrian with a sigh. "Evelyn's continuing her studies. Probably overseas. That professor she mentioned teaches at an international med school..."
"Good for her," Adrian said simply. "I'm sure Dominic would approve."
"Then why won't he see her?" Sophie huffed. "She's the one who found him after his fall... It's not like she pushed him. Why punish her?"
Adrian simply pulled Sophie closer as they continued their stroll through the swirling snowflakes.
